The 3-year-old son of a beloved Alabama sports reporter, Christina Chambers, and her husband, who were killed in a suspected murder-suicide, led his grandfather in the home to discover the slain couple’s bodies, according to a report.
Christina Chambers, a former WBRC 6 sports reporter, and her husband, Johnny Rimes, were discovered with gunshot wounds at their family home in Hoover shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Hoover Police Department.
Cops believed the couple died in a murder-suicide, but continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Rimes’s father arrived at the residence to check on the family after they mysteriously didn’t turn up for a church event, neighbor Charles Maple told People.
His little grandson, who cops said was unharmed, opened the door to greet him, Maple added.
“The child answered the door,” Maple told the outlet, noting he learned the information from detectives. “And then they went back [into the home], and they found the bodies.”
“It is heartbreaking,” the neighbor added.
The couple had moved to the Hoover area just seven years ago and appeared to have a happy, loving relationship, Maple said.
After the child was born, Maple, however, noticed that “something wasn’t right,” he said, without elaborating.
“I was so shocked, but for some reason, I don’t know why, I wasn’t totally surprised.”
WBRC 6, a Fox affiliate station in Birmingham, aired a special emotional tribute to Chambers on Tuesday night, commending her relentless work ethic and kind-hearted spirit.
“Christina Chambers had a beautiful ability to naturally feel like a friend immediately,” said reporter Gillian Brooks.
“Many at WBRC are in shock that they are talking about Christina, this bright light, in the past tense,” Brooks added. “However, the WBRC family is reflecting on the impact she will have on their lives forever.”
The Hoover Police Department will continue to investigate the incident, and the Jefferson County Coroner will determine the cause and manner of their death.
