Sinister past of PR team behind Gavin Newsom’s $19M California vanity project

A powerhouse public relations firm hired by California to help boost its image has a controversial history tied to the Saudi royal family.

Edelman, one of the largest communications firms in the US, has been contracted by the state to help improve its reputation following Gavin Newsom’s tumultuous run as governor, to the tune of around $19 million in taxpayer funds.

The campaign began Monday and will run through the end of the year — around the same time Newsom’s term is set to conclude.

The firm previously worked with the Saudi government to help restore its global image after the 2018 killing of US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist who was critical of his government, was butchered on October 2, 2018, inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul by a team of Saudi agents.

His body was dismembered and never recovered. US intelligence later concluded the operation was likely approved by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

That same crown prince — the prime minister and heir apparent — reportedly hired Edelman in 2022 under a five-year contract to advise Saudi officials on improving their international image, including through celebrity partnerships, after the killing made the kingdom a global “pariah,” according to Politico.

Edelman was reportedly paid about $787,000 per year by the Saudi government for its services.

Last week, the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development awarded Edelman the California Brand Campaign contract following a request for proposals issued last year to “showcase its vibrant, diverse business community.”

Edelman has represented a wide range of high-profile clients, including corporations, industry groups and political figures.

Its past work includes advising companies such as Sara Lee and Advil, as well as organizations such as the California Wine Institute.

The firm has also been linked to political figures, including former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who previously worked there.

In addition to its work with Saudi Arabia, Edelman has been involved with other high-profile and politically sensitive clients, including the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour.

Saudi officials have also maintained ties with prominent US figures, including Jared Kushner — the son-in-law of President Donald Trump — who has sought investment from the kingdom for his private equity firm.

The California Post has reached out to Edelman and the governor’s office for comment on the contract and the firm’s past work.
