A stretch of the eastbound 105 Freeway in Los Angeles remains shut down hours after a driver was found shot in his car Thursday afternoon, with the closure continuing to snarl traffic and cause gridlock across the region.
The incident unfolded around 1:45 p.m. when California Highway Patrol officers were called to reports of an unresponsive motorist slumped over the wheel of a black Toyota Camry.
The vehicle was located in the carpool lane just west of Vermont Avenue on the eastbound side of the freeway.
Traffic was at a dead standstill, backed up in a sea of cars on the 105 Freeway.
All eyes were on the shattered rear passenger window, which bore the unmistakable mark of a bullet hole.
Paramedics rushed the victim to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
In response to the shooting, authorities shut down all lanes of the eastbound 105 Freeway west of Vermont Avenue, causing major traffic backups and widespread disruption.
Investigators are now working to identify whoever opened fire, but no suspect or suspect vehicle has been located.
No weapons were recovered at the scene, and authorities have not determined what led to the shooting.
