Microsoft made the bold move on Thursday to make one of its most popular and enduring Xbox game franchises available on its chief console competitor, the PlayStation 5.
Forza Horizon 5 will come out on the PS5 this spring, according to a blog post on the Forza website. This is part of Microsoft’s new strategy to boost sales by getting more of its exclusive games onto more platforms, whether it be the PS5 or the Nintendo Switch.
Forza Horizon 5 came out back in 2021 for the Xbox One, Xbox Series consoles and PC. The Horizon series is a spinoff of the Forza Motorsport franchise, retaining the same sim-racing style while trading Motorsport’s traditional pavement race tracks for off-road courses with more exotic vistas in locales such as France, Italy and Mexico.
Developer Panic Button is at the helm of the PS5 port and is working with Forza developers Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios. The port will have crossplay with the PC and Xbox versions of the game and you’ll be able to buy previous Car Packs as well as the Hot Wheels and Rally Adventure expansions. There are plans for a free content update for all platforms called Horizon Realms that will give players a curated collection of the community’s favorite Evolving World content.
Last year, Microsoft confirmed it was bringing more exclusives to the PS5, including Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but those were games made exclusive through the acquisition of publishers and developers. Forza Horizon 5 marks the first game crossing over to PlayStation that’s made by a studio that has so far only released Xbox games.
Microsoft also began releasing exclusive games for the Nintendo Switch last year, starting with Grounded and Pentiment. Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased on Wednesday that the company’s games would also be making their way to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
