The San Francisco Giants are off to a rough start in 2026 and frustrations appeared to boil over on Wednesday as they lost to the San Diego Padres.

Giants third baseman Matt Chapman made a quick play on a chopper from Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts in the bottom of the fifth inning. He had to make a quick and off-balanced throw to first baseman Casey Schmitt in an attempt to get the speedy batter.

Chapman’s throw appeared to be a little high, but catchable as it went off Schmitt’s glove and behind him. It allowed a runner on third base to score as the Padres extended their lead to 2-0.

The team then met on the mound to try to calm down. Chapman appeared to mouth, “Catch the f—ing ball,” to Schmitt as players met on the mound.

Both Schmitt and Chapman were credited with errors during the game. Chapman did make a heads-up play in the third inning when he threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. trying to score from third base on a grounder.

San Diego eventually picked up a 7-1 victory, dropping San Francisco to 2-4 on the year.

Chapman and Schmitt appeared to clear the air after the game, according to NBC Bay Area.

“We’re all brothers here. It’s the heat of the moment,” Chapman told reporters. “I’ve already talked to Casey and it’s all good. I figured that people would try to make that a big deal but it’s baseball and stuff happens. We all learn from it. We’ll move on. I already told him that it was kind of the heat of the moment. I was just wanting to get those outs. It happens.”

Schmitt said he wasn’t “mad about it” and understood that everyone on the team has the same goal – to win games.

“That’s my guy,” he added. “He’s always been in my corner and helped me out with everything. It is what it is and I should have caught the ball. We’re good. We’re men here and we’re trying to win games.”

Chapman was 0-for-4 at the plate and Schmitt was 0-for-3.
