A 14-year-old football star was tragically shot and killed in a Southern California neighborhood.
Jeremy Rosales, nicknamed “Tank,” was gunned down in Victorville Friday night near his home, police said.
Officers arrived at the scene near Glen Canyon Lane and Burwood Avenue after the shooting was reported at around 8:30 p.m., according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Rosales was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
Authorities have yet to release any information on potential suspects or details surrounding the circumstances of the killing, KTLA reported.
A GoFundMe was launched to cover funeral and memorial expenses.
“Tank was more than a football player. He was a great kid with an infectious smile, a loyal teammate, and a brother to so many who stood beside him on the field,” the fundraiser said.
“He showed up with heart, grit, and humility, always lifting others up and embodying what it truly means to be part of a team. To those who played football with him, Tank wasn’t just a teammate, he was family.
“His loss has shaken our community to its core,” the organizer of the fundraiser, which as of Monday was just under $1,500 shy of its $12,000 goal, said.
“Tank,” Rosales’ nickname, played football at Team Elite Sports Academy and attended Oak Hills High School.
“He developed a great name in the trenches because he was such a beast,” Coach Elliott Reyes told KTLA’s Carlos Saucedo. “He worked hard in the weight room, on the field. He was your typical student-athlete you would love to have in your program.”
Rosales was described as a hardworking, straight-A student.
The community is hosting a vigil in Hesperia today at 7:30 p.m., according to a Facebook post.
“Your life was cut short, but your memory will live on forever,” the post read. “Rest easy, Tank. We’ll take care of your mama.”
