iOS 18.4: How to Enable and Customize Apple Intelligence Priority Notifications

Apple released iOS 18.4 on March 31, more than two months after the release of iOS 18.3. The latest update introduced a new recipes section to Apple News, and it brought a handful of new emoji to all iPhones. The update also brings Priority Notifications to Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhones, like the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max or the iPhone 16 lineup.

Tech Tips

“Apple Intelligence can show you notifications that may be important in a separate section on the Lock Screen, so you can catch up on what you may have missed,” Apple writes in the feature’s description. “You can still swipe up to view all notifications.”

That means if you enable Priority Notifications, message notifications from your friends and family can appear near the top of your notification stack, rather than being buried beneath Ring alerts, Apple News updates and more. That way, you’ll see the notifications that are most important to you first.

An Expert’s Guide to iOS 18

When I downloaded iOS 18.4, Priority Notifications were off by default, so you have to enable the feature after you download the update.

Here’s how to enable Priority Notifications on your iPhone. And don’t forget, only Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhones can access this feature now. If you don’t have an iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max or a device from the iPhone 16 lineup you can’t access this feature yet.

How to turn Priority Notifications on

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Notifications.
3. Tap Prioritize Notifications.
4. Tap the slider next to Prioritize Notifications.

After you tap Prioritize Notifications, a drop-down menu will appear with all the apps you can receive Priority Notifications from. Every app in the menu will be enabled to send you Priority Notifications. You can go through the menu and disable a few or most of the apps, letting only certain apps send you Priority Notifications.

I don’t need Priority Notifications for Bluesky or Mail, for example, but I do want the feature for Messages and Phone. If someone calls me, it must be important right?
