A crazed sniper gunned down at least three immigrants as they were being led into an ICE facility to be processed early Wednesday, authorities said of the “monstrous” attack.
The unidentified gunman shot from a rooftop as agents led into the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement office just before 7 a.m. local time — just a month after there was a bomb threat there, Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News.
There were “three fatalities, potentially detainees,” McLaughlin said.
The dead did not include law enforcement, but there are “other injuries, with some in critical condition,” McLaughlin said — calling it “monstrous.”
The shooter opened fire while the detainees were being transferred and the portcullis to the facility was open, Fox News reported, citing authorities.
The shooter — identified as a white male — was found dead on the roof of a nearby immigration attorney’s office from a self-inflicted gun wound as agents were closing in, police sources told the outlet.
It isn’t clear if other shooters were involved in the attack.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed there had been “multiple injuries and fatalities.”
“While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop,” she said on X. “Please pray for the victims and their families.”
“The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families,” Vice President JD Vance wrote on X.
