“How do you feel about war?” asks a cheerful Allen the Alien in the season 4 trailer for Invincible.
The stage is set for the Viltrumite War in Prime Video‘s adaptation of the Invincible comic series, and the new season premieres today with its first three episodes.
By now, Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) — aka Invincible — has been beaten up a million and one times. He’s battled cyborgs, Martians, mad scientists and evil versions of himself. He survived a brutal fight with his own father, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). And after his battle with the bloodthirsty Conquest at the end of season 3, Mark seems to be relying on robotic limbs (designed by Rudy, aka Robot).
All of that pales in comparison to what’s coming next.
The season 4 trailer shows the Viltrumites preparing to conquer Earth. Season 3 revealed that fewer than 50 members of the ruthless alien race remain. Unfortunately, even one of them could destroy Mark and lay waste to his home planet. And this season will introduce Thragg (Lee Pace), the strongest Viltrumite of all.
Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen) sounds considerably less cheerful in the latest teaser trailer: “Everything bad is happening all at the same time.”
Remember when Oliver was just a baby?
But Mark will be getting some help from new allies. There’s the Coalition of Planets, whose members include Allen the Alien and the Viltrumite defector Thadeus. They’re teaming up with Atom Eve, Tech Jacket and the other Guardians of the Globe superheroes. And they’re joined by Battle Beast and Mark’s half brother Oliver, now a teenager. (They grow up so fast!)
One big question mark hovers over Season 4: Omni-Man. The former hero betrayed Earth and his son; he’s since received his own share of beatdowns, escaped from the Viltrum Empire’s prison and joined the Coalition of Planets to redeem himself. But has he really returned as an ally?
“You’ll have to trust me,” he says to Mark.
We’ll all find out soon. The first three episodes launch today, with one new episode airing each Wednesday until the season finale on April 22.
