Some weeks, it feels like there are very few big shows or movies premiering, while other weeks, it’s an embarrassment of riches. This week feels like the latter, because its seems like every streaming platform has been saving up their best stuff for the end of summer.
You can catch two new premieres that are sure to top Netflix’s most-watched lists: Long Story Short, the fresh show from the creator of the beloved BoJack Horseman, and The Truth About Jussie Smollett?, a feature-length documentary that features the actor speaking on his complicated legal troubles.
On HBO Max this week, John Cena returns as DC’s Peacemaker in the show of the same name. Prime Video has dropped the new romance The Map That Leads to You, starring Madelyn Cline and K.J. Apa. And on Hulu, you can catch the first two episodes of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, a limited series about the murder trial of American student Amanda Knox, starring Grace Van Patten.

The Truth About Jussie Smollett? (Aug. 22)
In 2019, at the height of his career, actor Jussie Smollett was allegedly the victim of an assault in Chicago. As time went on and his story changed, Smollett was later accused of making the whole thing up and even conspiring to arrange the attack. Now, six years later, Smollett himself will speak on the subject to try and set the record straight about what really happened that night.
Long Story Short (Aug. 22)
Long Story Short is the new animated comedy from the creator of BoJack Horseman, Raphael Bob-Waksberg. In the new show, which arrives on Aug. 22, we follow the Schwooper siblings, flashing back and forth between their childhood and adult lives. The voice cast includes Paul Reiser, Abbi Jacobson, Lisa Edelstein, Ben Feldman, Max Greenfield and Nicole Byer.
In the new limited series Hostage, Suranne Jones stars as the British prime minister whose husband is kidnapped during the French president’s visit to the United Kingdom, leading to a blackmail plot and tension between the rival leaders. The cast includes Julie Delpy and Corey Mylchreest, who’s also currently starring in one of Netflix’s summer hits, My Oxford Year.

The Map That Leads to You (Aug. 20)
Directed by Lasse Hallström, The Map That Leads to You is a romantic drama starring Madelyn Cline as a young woman who travels to Europe after her college graduation, where she meets a handsome stranger (K.J. Apa) and has a whirlwind romance that changes their lives. The film, which premiered on Prime Video Aug. 20, is based on the novel of the same name by J.P. Monninger.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox (Aug. 20)
Tell Me Lies star Grace Van Patten stars in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, a dramatized version of the murder trial of the American college student accused of killing her roommate while studying abroad. In reality, Knox was ultimately acquitted of any wrongdoing, but the series explores her fight to prove her innocence while the world judged her and presumed her guilty.
In the new Hulu heist thriller Eenie Meanie, Samara Weaving stars as Edie, a a former teenage getaway driver who has to return to her past life in order to save her boyfriend, played by Karl Glusman. The ensemble cast also includes Jermaine Fowler, Marshawn Lynch, Randall Park, Steve Zahn and Andy Garcia.

James Gunn wrote and executive produced the new season of Peacemaker, the DC Comics-based series spun off from 2021’s The Suicide Squad. The series, which debuted on HBO Max on Aug. 21, stars John Cena as the titular superhero and takes place after the events of this summer’s DCU reboot of Superman. Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma and Jennifer Holland co-star, and the season will consist of eight episodes, with the finale airing on Oct. 9.
