For the first time ever, WWE’s SummerSlam, the company’s iconic summer event, is being extended to two days: Saturday, Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 3. It’s all going down at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, and if you’ve been paying attention to the in-ring drama over the past few months, you’ll know that this jam-packed SummerSlam is going to be a must-watch.
Of the marquee matches that’ll unfold, one of the most-anticipated bouts is the rematch between Cody Rhodes and John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Since Cena’s heel turn, Rhodes has been on a drawn-out mission to win back the belt and get vengeance against the superstar. There’s less than half a year left until Cena hangs it up for good, and something tells me their battle, which is being billed as a street fight, is going to bring the house down.
C.M. Punk came out the victor in the gauntlet match against Bron Breakker, which qualified him to go head-to-head with the Ring General Gunther for the WWE Heavyweight Championship. It’s been nearly 16 years since Punk held the title. The question is, does he have what it takes to defeat Gunther?
Other noteworthy matches include “Main Event” Jey Uso and Roman Reigns vs. Bron Breakker and Big Bronson Reed; Tiffany Stratton vs. Jade Cargill for the WWE Women’s Championship; a triple threat match between Naomi, Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley for the Women’s World Championship title and the odd tag team battle of Randy Orton and Jelly Roll (yes, the country singer) vs. Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul.
